In Time Wasting

When it comes to maximizing your employee's productivity, blocking websites might be one of the best moves or one of the worst. Employees spend a substantial amount of time surfing the web during the work day, so employers have been trying to figure out how to slim that time down. In 2015, Forbes conducted a survey asking 750 employees "How much time do you waste per day browsing the internet?". This is what the survey concluded:

  • 31% waste roughly 30 minutes' daily
  • 31% waste roughly 1 hour daily
  • 16% waste roughly 2 hours' daily
  • 6% waste roughly 3 hours' daily
  • 2% waste roughly 4 hours' daily
  • 2% waste 5 or more hours' daily

That means that 4% of employees waste half a day just poking around the internet. Half of the work day!

Blocking websites can help boost productivity and get employees moving in the right direction. However, if that power is abused you may see an opposite effect. Employees can feel that there is an unnecessary big brother.

With that being said let's take a look at some of the biggest time wasters:

1.  Youtube

It is the original time waster. You can start off watching a harmless video about how to find your computer name but before you know it you have lost 3 hours and are now watching a computer name newborn kittens.

2. Zillow

There is nothing more fun than looking at houses you may be able to afford in 20 years.

3. Reddit

You're not quite sure how to use it but man is it fun reading people's comments on really absurd topics.

4. Buzzfeed (More Importantly, Buzzfeed Quizzes)

There is nothing like the anticipation of waiting to find out what Ryan Gosling character is your soulmate. Buzzfeed quizzes are the ultimate time wasters.

5. Wikipedia

Some may pose the argument of, "I learn a lot from Wikipedia! It's not a time waster". Yes, yes, it is. I don't need you to tell me each state bird and rock of all 50 states. I am not training to be a Jeopardy champion. If you are, more power to you. Search away my friend!

6. Lifehacker

Lifehacker is the center to amazing productivity tips (which is quite ironic). Do you need to fold a months' worth of clothes into a shoebox? This is your site.

7. Netflix

Who says you must stop binge watching at home? Probably your boss. However, this doesn't stop the dedicated show watchers.

8. Facebook

Of course, I could group all social media together but there is just something about Facebook when it comes to workplace time wasters. Facebook takes the crown by a landslide. For some reason people just can't get enough of weird videos and looking at old high school classmates.

These are just a few sites that burn up a lot of time. We could go on forever but we have to get back to fitting our months' worth of clothes in that darn shoebox. They make it look so easy!
